Construction begins this spring! As many of you may know NSP to is set to begin renovations to the community gardens located behind the coop this spring. Located at 8,240 ft., Nederland’s harsh sun, subzero winters, short growing season, and 100 mph winds require special efforts when gardening. In order to produce foods for the home and community year-round, season extension structures like cold frames, mobile hoop houses, and greenhouses are necessary tools. The fall and winter fundraising priority of NSP is to acquire the materials and financial support necessary to provide a community garden prepared to meet high-altitude gardening challenges successfully. By localizing our food production NSP is working to make fresh and nutritious food affordable to our community, as well as taking positive environmental action by reducing the demand to transport produce.

Improvements to the gardens will be planned and implemented through our classroom series, where students will have the opportunity to learn about and incorporate permaculture techniques through the designing and construction of the future gardens. Spring will bring the call for hard-working folks to pitch in and make these plans a reality!! If you are looking to learn more about localizing food production in our mountain climate and improve downtown Nederland, watch for the Garden Design Course on our Spring schedule: March 24th, 9-5 at the Community Garden and COOP commons room.
